New edition of the "Sex is power" dossier, edited by the info.nodes and onData associations. More than 80% of newspaper management is entrusted to men (ANSA)

   The power?

It is still firmly in the hands of men.

The answer is in the data: there are only 5 managing directors in the top 100 Italian companies by capitalization listed on the stock exchange.

In the remaining 95% of cases sitting on the most important chair of the board of directors of these companies are men.

It is one of the data that emerges from the new edition of the "Sex is power" dossier, edited by the info.nodes and onData associations.

A snapshot of what is defined as "the gender imbalance in the exercise of power in Italy", still "so profound as to appear almost unbridgeable".

The two associations used open data but also manually collected data, to draw a map of how power is distributed between the sexes, with a focus on economic sectors,

"There is a very large imbalance in all three domains analyzed - explains to ANSA Paola Masuzzo of onData -. Power is still declined in the male".

"We are not concerned with understanding whether women are better than men, but whether they have the same spaces and resources at their disposal", underlines Davide Del Monte of info.nodes.

Among the companies controlled or participated by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, info.nodes and onData explain, "there are clearly more men who hold the role of managing director: 28 out of 34", therefore more than 82%.

The information sector was also analysed: among the 27 national dailies, with a circulation of more than 30,000 copies, in 81.5% of cases the direction is entrusted to a man.

"Only 5 newspapers are directed by women and moreover in three cases (Il Resto del Carlino, La Nazione and Il Giorno, all belonging to the QN group) the director is the same, Agnese Pini".

Things are no better among the national news, whose direction is entrusted to a woman only in 2 cases out of 10 - and with one post, that of TG2, whose former director Gennaro Sangiuliano is now Minister of Culture, now vacant.

    What about politics?

While the first female Prime Minister in Italian history, Giorgia Meloni, sits in Palazzo Chigi, local politics continues to be dominated by male power: "out of 121,231 citizens who hold an elective role at the municipal or regional level, registered by the Registry of the directors of the Ministry of the Interior, men are 80,240 and therefore represent 66,

The most "black" data is that of mayors and mayors: the two associations analyzed the 7,452 municipalities surveyed on the portal of the Ministry of the Interior for which this information is available.

Result?

There are 6,331 men, or 84.96%, while 1,121 women.

Finally, if one looks at the top management of the 19 independent authorities surveyed by Openpolis, the prevalence of men in charge is overwhelming: 17 out of 19, over 89%.
