"I liked the sadness but also the hope in it": Eli Butner returns to "Tifot" | Israel today

2022-12-01T07:19:11.674Z

He took a verse from one song and a chorus from another song, and welded them into one infectious and addictive hit, which is considered one of the favorites of Eli Butner and the children of the outdoors. • It was even an opportunity for him to shine and sing himself, which at first seemed strange to him. , he tells "Israel Today" everything that happened in the background • "Songs behind the scenes" - the stories behind the hits

After a respectable mileage of stage time as a guitarist who got used to seeing the backs of the artists with whom he created and played, his group with the children of the outdoors pushed Eli Butner to move to the front and occasionally play a beautiful voice of his own.

He is now celebrating a decade of activity with them.

The band's single "Drops", released in 2015, was full of quotes that burned into people's hearts and became one of the band's most beloved hits.

Butner tells "Israel Today" about the behind the scenes of the song with the melodic chorus that is hard not to hum.

What is the story of the song?

"All my songs have an autobiographical core. Although the song was not written out of a broken heart, but out of concern and questions. The drops that fall on the window but don't stay symbolize the here and now that will soon disappear, end, be washed away with the current, sometimes like love that ends. The song was originally written In the male voice, but because of the musical change that comes in the chorus, we turned it into a duet in the female voice, which in retrospect added another dimension to the story."

How was the song born?

"All my songs start with a melody and only then do I write the lyrics. 'Tifat' is a combination of two songs that I started writing and didn't finish, and I decided to connect them. One song had a verse that I felt complete with, but the chorus didn't work for me and the other song was exactly the opposite. So I took the verse from here and the chorus from there and that's how 'Tifat' was created. One of the reasons the song became a duet comes from the differences in scales between the verse and the chorus."

What was the inspiration?

"I wrote the song during Operation Tzuk Eitan. It has touches from my personal life and the life close to me. It's a love song at the cost of our lives and a reality that hits us many times, but in the end, we stay, find a way - despite everything. I remember us going to perform in front of soldiers at Tzuk Etan Exciting, powerful and very significant performances for us."

effect?

"The truth is that in this song I was not influenced musically by anything specific."

How was the recording experience in the studio?

"

Most of the time I don't sing my songs, and from the beginning I collaborate with wonderful singers. The songs I send to singers I first record as a sketch at my house, in my own voice. In the case of 'Tipota', something in the sketch I recorded was correct and we said it was worth it if I recorded the verses and if It will work, let's leave my singing, and that's how it really was."

How did the song enter the mind?

"The song was received with great love both on the radio and at concerts and immediately became one of the favorite songs in the show. It has sentences that people take with them for life and it always moves me very much, such as 'giving everything and receiving so little', 'see the fear takes over but in the end I stay',' We will fall to war, to comfort on the doorstep'. People quote the song, take it to themselves, to their lives and their experiences. I remember hearing the song for the first time on the radio and it was strange to hear myself singing, but I liked what I heard. The sadness in it, but The hope too."

What responses did you get?

"It was a surprise to the general public to hear me suddenly sing and the reactions were very moving. The song also accompanied my first compilation album, 'Milim, Han, Gitarot', which was released in 2015 and the clip featured close friends who are an integral part of my career; Haim Romano who was a teacher Mine for the guitar, Guri Alfie who was with me in the band 'Funkenstein', Ran Danker, Kobi Apallo, Ohad Shargai and Ader Gold, who of course sang the choruses, our band and even my wife's songs, who was pregnant with our daughter Uri."
