According to new research by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, 93% of companies in the financial sector in Italy have experienced one or more cyberattacks or cybersecurity issues during the pandemic.

60% of respondents said that the company they work for has faced ransomware and spyware attacks.

Additionally, the data shows that phishing and malware attacks (58%) were especially prevalent.

Despite the high number of threats, 84% think their organization has all the tools it needs to thwart a cyberattack.

The research "IT security: focus on the financial sector in Italy" underlines how 67% of Italian managers in the financial sector consider the risk of an IT attack to be "high".

According to a technical manager of a large company with more than 5,000 employees, the greatest challenge is "being able to rely on a ready and responsive IT strategy" while smaller companies, with fewer than 5,000 employees, need "enough skills to cope with these problems".

As part of the study, the consequences in the event of a possible cyber-attack were also investigated.

Massive financial losses to customers and the business (44%) or fraud, manipulation and

misuse of services (40%) are the top two concerns for banking and financial companies, regardless of their size.

“Whether it's ransomware, phishing, targeted attacks or general malware, the financial sector is facing a diverse threat landscape. It is therefore not surprising that the IT decision makers surveyed rate the threat situation in Italy as high. "operating in the financial sector consider themselves sufficiently equipped against cyber-attacks since, among other things, they have contingency plans in place. However, the sector needs to invest more in security," said Cesare D'Angelo, General Manager Kaspersky Italia & Mediterranean .
