"How many times has
Tití asked me
this summer been heard?" asks Melanie Parejo, Spotify's music director in southern and eastern Europe.
Bad Bunny, author of the song, once again breaks world records and stands as the most listened to singer in the world for the third consecutive year, according to Spotify's annual report that studies the musical tastes of its 456 million users.
The platform, which accounts for 32% of the users of applications to listen to music, according to a report by MIDiA Research, is the company with the largest number of subscribers.
Bad Bunny's latest album,
A Summer Without You
(2022), takes the position for the most listened to album of 2022, a ranking that he already topped in 2020 when he released
YHLQMDLG
.
Now both titles slip into the classification.
Meanwhile, the female presence is scarce: only Rosalía —in Spain— and Taylor Swift —in the world— are among the 10 most listened to.
Only one in five artists on the charts is a woman.
Spotify is willing to schedule more women per week on the
most relevant
playlists .
“We have to force the algorithms.
We are pleased that the
rosalías,
the
shakiras
or the
taylors
exist , but they are quite alone, we must create the space for more to come ”, claims Parejo.
But these numbers do not measure success.
The metric used for the study takes into account only reproductions;
however, singers like Aitana are capable of selling out tickets at the WiZink Center or the Palau Sant Jordi.
The reason?
Consumption of songs by male artists is "ravenous" and on loop, "even by female listeners."
Bad Bunny, Bizarrap and Quevedo are the most repeated names in the Spotify studio.
The success of Benito Antonio Martínez (Bad Bunny) demonstrates, according to Parejo, the paradigm shift in the music industry: "Music in Spanish has ceased to be the little sister of Anglo-Saxon artists."
Christina Aguilera or Selena Gomez have released complete albums in Spanish when the trend was historically the other way around.
"There were many artists who played in English because they thought it was the way to go further," says the spokeswoman.
50% of the world's Spotify users, more than 215 million, listen to a Latin music song once a month at least.
“We are experiencing a music revolution in this language.
Until now we always had Spanish-speaking users who understood it, but now we are talking about Iceland, Korea...
Although globally English pop has not lost strength
—As it was,
by Harry Styles, is the song that has played the most—, the data shows the rise of music in Spanish, especially in the urban genre, in the world.
Bad Bunny has managed to place three songs from his latest album among the 10 most listened to —
Me porto pretty, Tití me pregunta
y
Ojitos lindos
—, accompanied by
Quédate
, as the Quevedo and Bizarrap session is known.
In Spain, English pop has been "eradicated at once" and has given way to reggaeton, bachata and
trap,
genres that make up the list of most listened to songs and albums in the country.
“We have been hearing that reggaeton floods us for years, but we know that the revolution has arrived because we have become more sophisticated and we differentiate sub-schools within the Latin genre”, comments Parejo.
Although the barrier between the genres has disappeared.
The director of Spotify Spain assures that today's artists are not pigeonholed and that is where they find their success: “Bizarrap can suddenly add a techno base to you and it cannot be said that Rosalía's latest album is of a unique style, the same is he goes to flamenco than to
trap”.
The reality is that the only representative on the national list of a style other than urban is Melendi, who appears as the tenth most listened to Spanish artist.
"Pop is reinventing itself," says Parejo.
Emerging artists like Hens, Walls or Ginebras bring guitars back into fashion in their songs.
And rock hasn't disappeared either: "You have to remember the Måneskin phenomenon from last year."
These cases are exceptions, and this is recognized by the Spotify spokeswoman herself.
The main fact is that the dominant trend “for young people, who are the ones who break the hits”, is a more urban sound.
The average user of the platform is between 18 and 25 years old, "which makes it seem that some genres are more in decline than others."
"The breeding ground is taking place in mergers, although we don't know where it will end," explains Parejo.
Fusions between genres such as those proposed by C. Tangana, who has placed his latest album among the five most listened to in Spain.
Some combinations that, in part, are also due to collaborations between artists of different nationalities, such as the relationship that has been established between Spain and Argentina.
Among the most listened to artists nationwide, this year only two autochthonous artists appear: Quevedo and Rosalía, in this order.
Bad Bunny is the head of the list that accompanies four other Puerto Ricans —Rauw Alejandro, Anuel AA, Myke Towers and Mora—, two Argentines —Bizarrap and Duki— and a Colombian —Feid.
"Puerto Rico and Colombia have been the great epicenters of music in Spanish in the last 10 years," says Parejo.
At this time, given the mutual influence between Spanish-speaking countries, the director maintains that it is very difficult to decide what is Latin and Spanish music, “in addition to the fact that the user cares little”.
The public asks for quality music.

But there is another question: does the public demand or does the algorithm of the platforms offer?
"What the algorithm does is personalize your experience, it will intervene to the extent that you want it to intervene," clarifies the representative.
On Spotify there are three types of
playlists:
editorials, in which only a human team is involved, such as Éxitos España;
the personalized ones, elaborated by the system, such as Weekly Discovery, and “the middle path”, which combines both methods, such as those dedicated to decades.
“If you only listen to what the machine offers you”, says Parejo, “you will always listen to your artists and styles”.
The cultural trend, according to the spokeswoman, is for music in Spanish to permeate the Anglo-Saxon world even more and that is what she hopes to see next year.
Meanwhile, adults have already gotten used to having what until now was "music for young people" in their day-to-day lives.
“Have you seen the grandmothers on TikTok doing the Despechá dance
?”
Parejo asks.
