Mehran Samak, 27, was shot dead by security forces after celebrating Iran's team's loss to the United States at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, human rights defenders said on Wednesday (November 30th).

Iran's defeat on November 29 against the United States, its sworn enemy, has created scenes of jubilation among some Iranians opposed to their government, while a major protest movement is shaking the country.

It started in September, after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died after being arrested by the vice squad.

Mehran Samak died, hit by bullets, after having honked at the wheel of his car in Bandar Anzali, northwest of Tehran.

The young man "was directly targeted and shot in the head by the security forces... After the defeat of the national team against America", said the group Iran Human Rights (IHR), based in Oslo.

Iranian international Saeid Ezatolahi, who played November 29 against the United States, posted a photo on Instagram where he poses as a child alongside Mehran Samak, whom he knew.

“After last night's bitter loss, the news of your passing set my heart on fire (…) This is not what our young people deserve.

This is not what our nation deserves, ”we can read in his story.

On social networks, videos where we see a crowd of people gather for the funeral of the young man, on November 30, circulate.

According to the BBC in Persian, the burial was held in Bandar Anzali, surrounded by heavy security.
