The truck driver responsible for the fatal investment of former cycling champion
Davide Rebellin
has been identified .
It would be a 62-year-old German citizen, identified thanks to the collaboration between the carabinieri and the German police.
After the accident, which took place on November 30, the man had lost track of him.
He was reported on the loose, but not placed in custody, because the German code does not provide for the crime of vehicular homicide.
The truck driver was fully aware of what had happened: after the collision on the regional 11 roundabout, he had in fact got out of the cab of the truck, approached the victim on the ground, then got back into the truck and moved away quickly.
A fact reported to the carabinieri by eyewitnesses, some of whom had also photographed him. Among other things, he had already been sentenced in Italy, in Foggia, in 2001, for having fled after an accident without providing assistance to the people involved.
The man works for a shipping company in Recke, North Rhine-Westphalia, owned by his brother.
In addition to a plea deal for fleeing the accident site without providing assistance, the man had another precedent, also in Italy.
In 2014, his license was withdrawn by the Chieti traffic police, for driving under the influence.
