Do you actually know the difference between naan and pita?

Although both are flatbreads, they are different.

Not only because of the origin, but also the ingredients and recipes used are not the same.

Here are the ingredients you need to make the Middle Eastern Pita Flatbread

  • 15 grams of yeast

  • 300 ml lukewarm water

  • 500g flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3 tbsp olive oil

You will also need a rolling pin and some butter or margarine and flour to grease the baking sheet for baking the Middle Eastern pita bread.

How to prepare the Middle Eastern Flatbread Pita

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water.

  • Then put the flour, salt and olive oil in the bowl, mix the ingredients and knead them into a firm dough.

  • Cover the bread dough with a cloth and let it rise for an hour.

  • Shape the bread dough into a roll about 2 cm thick.

  • Then cut off slices that are about one centimeter wide.

  • Then roll these slices into small balls, which you also cover and leave to rise for another ten minutes.

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Celsius top/bottom heat (circulating air 230 degrees Celsius).

  • Using a rolling pin, roll out the balls into oval discs.

  • Grease and flour a baking sheet before placing the pita bread slices on top and putting them in the oven to bake.

  • The Middle Eastern pita bread takes about eight to 10 minutes to bake.

How to prepare the flatbread naan from India

  • Put the lukewarm milk, half a tablespoon of sugar and the dry yeast in a bowl and stir well.

Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 20 minutes to allow the yeast to dissolve and the mixture to get nice and fluffy.

  • You will need two smaller bowls: in one, beat the egg and in the other, mix the yoghurt until fluffy.

  • Take another large bowl and add the flour, salt and baking powder and mix well - preferably with a mixer.

This is followed by two tablespoons of sugar, the contents of the first bowl, the sunflower oil, the blended yoghurt and the beaten egg.

Blend again and knead the pita dough, about 10 minutes, until the Middle Eastern flatbread dough is smooth.

  • Then put some oil in another bowl to roll the dough in it.

Cover the bowl of pita bread dough with cling film and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

  • After the rising time, knead the dough well again and form six balls of about the same size.

Then sprinkle some flour on top and roll out balls one at a time to create thin round slices of bread dough.

  • Fry the dough slices one after the other evenly on both sides in a hot pan with a little fat.

Both Middle Eastern pita and Indian naan pair well with other recipes, like Hawaiian poké bowls or Korean kimchi.

Or you can fill your flatbread with delicious Chili sin Carne.

A slice of flatbread also goes wonderfully with green minestrone.
