"We are here to renew the League, not to destroy it because otherwise we would only be doing Roman centralism a favor. But many people, our militants, have been asking me for some time 'Bossi, do something!'. And we couldn't stand still".
This was stated by Umberto Bossi this morning, speaking at the castle of Giovenzano (Pavia) at the first public meeting of the Northern Committee which he himself founded after the disappointing result of the League in the political elections of 25 September.

Paolo Grimoldi and MEP Angelo Ciocca, the two coordinators of the Committee chosen by Bossi, underlined the reasons for this choice at the beginning.
"At 81, it is still Bossi who gives us emotions - underlined Ciocca -. The League has always been the 'union of the North' and must go back to dealing with the real problems of this land. The Committee is the Voltaren of the League. We cannot accept that today in the North there are unsolved problems concerning hospitals, schools, roads. The interests of the North must be defended. We started a month and a half ago and we are already at 1,200 members.
Let's take it one step at a time". "We have already involved 60 percent of the provinces of Lombardy and we have received requests for membership from the rest of the region, from Veneto, Piedmont, Marche and also from other areas - added Grimoldi -.
