When buying the goose for the Christmas feast, consumers have to consider a few things.

Again and again scammers offer German geese, but they come from Poland.

Experts explain what to look out for.

Goose is also on the menu for many families at Christmas 2022.

As

echo24.de

has already reported, the popular Christmas dinner is significantly more expensive this year.

And then consumers should also take a very close look.

There are scammers in the goose business.

Almost everyone would like to have a German goose on their plate.

Animal welfare is important to consumers.

But the broadcaster "NDR" showed in a report that not all geese really deserve an organic seal and certainly not from Germany.

The goose at Christmas: Consumers should pay attention to correct labelling

According to the article, consumers should “pay close attention to the description of the goods”

when buying the Christmas goose

.

As the article shows, the scammers use pretty farm images or labels like "from the farm" or "country goose" to trick buyers.

They are supposed to believe

"the animal came from species-appropriate husbandry"

.

However, according to the "Consumer Center" the decisive factor is the organic seal or the EU-wide, protected designations "free range", "peasant free range" and "peasant free range unlimited outlet".

It goes on to say:

"With these forms of husbandry, which are legally defined throughout Europe, producers must guarantee at least four square meters of outdoor space per animal in free-range housing, and even ten square meters per goose in free-range farming or even unlimited freedom of access"

The wrong goose at Christmas: Signs of fraud

As the "NDR" writes, the scammers can charge significantly more than for imported goods.

That's why it happens again and again that cheap goods from abroad are offered as domestic ones, warns Mirko Pabel, Managing Director of Dithmarscher poultry.

Such relabeling is difficult to recognize, but there are warning signs*:

  • Goose breast and goose legs are usually significantly more expensive per kilo than whole geese.

The wages for the dismantling and the costs for the disposal of the remainders are added.

  • The demand for German geese is so great that they are usually sold out shortly before the holidays, as RUHR24 also reports.

If retailers can still offer spontaneous customers a German goose right before the festival, the origin should be critically questioned.

*Information according to the NDR report

According to information, fresh geese from species-appropriate husbandry should cost around 20 euros per kilogram.

Organic poultry is usually a bit more expensive.

Frozen imported geese are available in supermarkets for as little as 5 to 8 euros per kilo.

The goose from the supermarket: Experts advise against these products

The consumer advice center writes about the supermarket geese:

“Most of the animals (85-90 percent) in the supermarket counters come from Hungary and Poland.

Until there is also a guaranteed species-appropriate offer in the supermarket, customers only have to trust the manufacturer's self-imposed information "No force fattening" and "No live plucking" when buying gooses"

When buying goose for Christmas, the experts clearly advise against products from Bulgaria, France, Poland and Hungary that are not clearly labeled.

Customers should ignore these products.

Here, too, misleading information is often advertised - but "rural rearing" or "animal-friendly husbandry" are not protected and say nothing about the husbandry conditions.

Consumers must pay attention to this when buying frozen goose

According to the consumer advice center, anyone who chooses a frozen goose for their Christmas feast should

"make sure that the packaging is not damaged and does not protrude beyond the stacking limit in the freezer"

.

Customers can identify the "cooling limit" by a line on the side of the chest.

According to the label, frozen goods should have a shelf life of at least a year.

"Before preparation, the goose must be thawed slowly in the refrigerator in good time, which can take up to 24 hours"
