Singer Shakira at a Divorce and Custody Court Date (December 1, 2022): Statement for the media

Colombian singer Shakira has denied rumors of a liaison.

"I don't have a new partner," says a statement that was reported by "El Pais," among others.

The singer, 45, and soccer professional Gerard Piqué, 35, made their separation public in the summer.

The couple have two sons, aged nine and seven.

After the split, rumors spread that Shakira was dating her surfing instructor.

In the statement, she now asks the media to stop such "speculation" - out of "respect for my children and the difficult situation they are in at the moment".

She herself only wants to devote herself entirely to her sons.

The Spanish newspaper also reports, citing anonymous sources from Shakira's environment, that the relationship with the surf instructor is "purely professional".

Two days before the statement, on Thursday, Shakira and Piqué had also agreed on joint custody and divorce, according to the report.

The agreement provides that the father can visit his children as often as he wants.

The cost of the trips would be borne by both parties.

In a brief statement, the couple said they had signed an agreement that "guarantees the welfare of our children."

"Broken to the Ground"

At the end of September, Shakira spoke about the separation in an interview.

She suffered greatly from it: "There were days when I was broken on the ground."

The reports, said Shakira, put a lot of strain on the children: »Paparazzi sit in front of my house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There is no place where I can hide from them with my children except in my house.” She cannot go for a walk without being accompanied by photographers.

Tax evasion lawsuit

In addition, the pop star will soon be on trial on suspicion of tax evasion.

At the end of September, the judiciary in Barcelona formally opened the trial against the 45-year-old.

The musician is accused of evading a total of around 14.5 million euros between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira is Colombian.

The core question is where she was taxable in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The Spanish authorities consider that she should have paid income tax in Spain because she stayed there for more than half a year in each of the three years.

The singer denies that. Her lawyers also point out that her income comes mainly from international tours.

At that time she lived in the Bahamas and only visited her then partner Piqué in Barcelona.

Only from 2015 did she live permanently in Barcelona.
