Precision work with a colossus: This new railway bridge was set up on Sunday night over the A70 near Bergrheinfeld in the Bavarian district of Schweinfurt.
It weighs 750 tons, is more than 62 meters long and a good 12 meters high and wide.
Time was of the essence when maneuvering the bridge.
Daniel Cifrain, Project Manager Deutsche Bahn
»The difficulty with such a construction project is the crossing between two heavily frequented traffic routes.
In particular, there is only a very short period of time for joint closures of the motorway and the tracks.
That's why we decided in advance that we would have the arched superstructure delivered to the construction site in individual parts and fully assembled, and that we would now move it into its final position tonight with precision work.«
The steel bridge was assembled next to the highway for more than three months.
At half a kilometer per hour, you cross the street at night.
Daniel Cifrain, Project Manager Deutsche Bahn
»A so-called SPMT is used for the actual insertion.
Means in German: self-propelled modular vehicles.
For our measure, it consists of four individual wagons with a total of 80 axles.
Such modular vehicles have been designed solely for the transport of very bulky and large loads and have a maximum speed of 0.5 kilometers per hour.
Furthermore, wheel loaders, excavators, trucks are used today – and there are currently around 60 people on the construction site who will then carry out the insertion.«
Installation took about two and a half hours.
The 16 million euro construction replaces an old bridge on the Schweinfurt - Waigoldshausen railway line.
Trains are scheduled to roll here again on December 9th.
