An apparently killed infant was discovered at a hiking parking lot near Ruhpolding.
A witness discovered the newborn on Sunday afternoon in the forest near the Seekopf car park, said the Oberbayern Süd police headquarters.
The emergency services who were notified then hid the baby behind a wall on the hiking trail in the direction of Förchensee.
Investigators from the police and public prosecutor's office secured traces on site on Sunday.
According to the first investigations, the newborn should have been filed promptly to the find.
Police are looking for witnesses
An autopsy carried out on Sunday gave evidence of a violent death, it said.
The public prosecutor's office in Traunstein had therefore initiated investigations into a homicide.
The police called on the population to provide information about abnormalities in the area around the hiking car park and the possible child's mother.
A police spokesman did not want to give details of the dead baby and the cause of death, citing the ongoing investigation.
