(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 06 - Since the beginning of the year there have been 79 cases of suicide in prison, the highest number ever recorded in the last 10 years.
In a report, the Guarantor of persons deprived of personal liberty indicates that the figure is even more alarming if it is compared to the total number of prisoners: in 2022 there are in fact 11 thousand fewer than in 2012, but there have been 23 more suicides.
There are 74 men and 5 women, 33 were recognized with personal or social fragility, homeless, people with mental illness;
about one in 5 suicides occurs in the first 10 days of admission.
In 10 years there have been a total of 583 suicides.
