Milford Sound

Nature lovers?

It's not allowed, but you simply must not give up this spectacular fjord on the southern island of the country, which attracts over half a million tourists every year - and it's not hard to understand why.

Milford Sound is located in the Fiordland National Park and the World Heritage Site Te Wahipunamu, it is about 15 km long and the mountains that surround it (which reach a height of over 1,500 meters) give the experience a dramatic and breathtaking feeling. Most tourists come here from Queenston (about three and a half hours' drive), Then you decide how to review this spectacular natural site. In the visitor center located at the eastern end of the fjord you will find a small airport, where you can join a flight by light plane, or choose one of the many companies that offer a cruise, in different price and luxury categories (about four hours). Just don't forget Umbrella - Milford Sound is one of the rainiest areas in New Zealand.Walkers can leave from Lake Te Anau for the Milford Trek - one of the most famous and rewarding treks in the country.

Franz Josef Glacier

among us, how many times have you walked on a glacier?

You can do this, and even without a problem, on the west coast of the South Island, in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park (Westland Tai Poutini National Park).

The Franz Joseph Glacier reaches a length of 12 km, and if you have already reached it, it is recommended to use one of the tourist companies to go on an organized hiking trip (you can, of course, also just look at it from below), which includes all the necessary equipment. Not enough for you ? Some companies offer airplanes that will take you to the top of the glacier, or even skydiving in front of the glacier scenery. About half an hour's drive from the Franz Joseph Glacier you will find its "brother", the Fox Glacier, and it is also worth a visit.

Mount Cook It

is difficult to talk about New Zealand without mentioning the highest mountain in the country (3,724 meters).

The mountain, part of the Southern Alps mountain chain, was named after the explorer James Cook (who arrived in New Zealand in 1769) and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990. It is located in the center of the South Island, about four hours' drive from Christchurch. 'Ratz', and it is recommended to reach it on non-rainy days (if the weather doesn't brighten your face, you won't really find anything to do around the mountain). Did you do it? Excellent, now many hiking trails await you - from particularly difficult trails that will take you several days and overlooking glaciers , and more comfortable day routes. Either way, your investment will pay off, when you see the spectacular view that emerges from every corner.

Queenstown

The resort town in the southwest of the South Island is beautiful, pleasant and full of happenings, but most of its visitors don't come to look at the view, but to take part in extreme sports - it's not for nothing that many call it the "adventure capital".

Adrenaline lovers will find almost every possible attraction there - from rafting in the Shotover or Quarao rivers, through Omega and bungee jumping, to mountain biking and skydiving.

Rotorua

This lovely city lies on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, on the North Island of the country, and is famous mainly for its thermal sites.

Have you spent time trekking and extreme sports and now you just want to rest?

You have come to the right place!

In Rotorua you will find a variety of geothermal sites - including hot springs, geysers and mud pools.

It's hard to go out on the streets without smelling the sulfur smells, but you get used to that too.

Besides the lakes and parks that surround it, and other opportunities for adventure sports, of course, Rotorua is also full of history and art, and is a great place for anyone who wants to learn about Maori culture.

Wanaka

About an hour's drive from Queenstown (and with far fewer tourists), this charming resort town awaits you, located next to Lake Wanaka, the fourth largest in the country.

Let's put it this way: most visitors to Wanaka don't come to hang out at the hotel.

Around the town you can find a variety of trekking routes and unique observation points, and within it, you will find a variety of tourist companies that will offer you attractions that are hard to refuse (for example: flying over Mount Cook).

Did you come in winter?

You will be happy to hear about two popular ski resorts not far away - Cardrona and Treble Cone.

And if you've already found yourself in Wanaka, it's worth visiting the 3D Puzzling World Maze.

Not just for kids!

Waiheke

is a beautiful island in the Oraki Gulf, which can be reached by ferry from Auckland (about 40 minutes).

On the weekends it is indeed filled with residents of the biggest city in New Zealand, but still - you shouldn't miss it.

Beautiful beaches, wineries with great wine, and yes, of course, nature.

But unlike other places we mentioned, in Waihiki people come mainly to rest, eat well and drink well.

Dunedin

The second largest city in the South Island was founded by Scottish settlers, and therefore it combines both Scottish and Maori heritage.

This combination definitely works: the architecture is beautiful, the cafes are charming, the botanical garden is definitely worth a visit, and one of the days it is recommended to use one of the tourist companies to go on a seal, sea lion and albatross viewing tour.

If you're lucky, you won't even have to leave the city to see penguins - on some nights, they can be seen on Dunedin's boardwalk.

Bonus: the city also has Baldwin Street, which is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the steepest street in the world.
