Over 68% of Italian SMEs have passed the basic level of corporate welfare and the number of those with a very high and high level doubles, going from 10.3% in 2016 to 24.7% in 2022. Taking a picture of the sector is the Generali Welfare Index Pmi 2022 Report.

More specifically, 70.7% of companies with over 250 employees have a high level of welfare (64.1% in 2017);

in companies with between 101 and 250 employees, the share is 66.8% (59.5% in 2017).

Micro-enterprises then doubled (from 6 to 9 employees) with a high level of welfare, going from 7.7% in 2017 to 15.1% in 2022. "The increase - reads the report - is largely due to the simplification of regulations and public resources allocated for social protection, encouraging companies, even the smallest ones,

to commit themselves in turn to support families". The areas that see a greater commitment by businesses are "Security and working conditions" (74% of SMEs with high and very high levels), "Community welfare" (66.5% ), "Rights, diversity and inclusion" (47.8%), "Training and development of human capital" (40.6%). An analysis carried out with Cerved also shows how "companies with more evolved welfare achieve above-average productivity.

In 2021, the return on turnover of these companies was in fact double that of companies with an entry level: 6.7% against 3.7%". The report, which analyzed the activities of over 6,500 companies, explains how "

The most important areas of social impact are the promotion of work and social mobility, the possibility offered to young people to achieve stable employment, support for rights and equal opportunities for working women.

The study also underlines that "SMEs with more developed welfare have held up better in the pandemic and shown greater momentum in the recovery" which highlights how corporate welfare is also "a factor of resilience".

At the same time as the Welfare Index, Generali presented the Position Paper, which explains how "corporate welfare will be able to expand, making a significant contribution to the general renewal of welfare systems, if public institutions activate partnerships at all levels with companies".
