Germany's banks and savings banks are preparing to upgrade the Girocard.
It is still called the "EC card" by many.
The Girocard should get more functions.
This was announced by the Association of German Banks (BdB).
"We want to make the Girocard even more usable with new functions in online trading and in the digital world," she said
German Press Agency (dpa) the deputy of the BdB general manager, Henriette Peucker.

"For example, it is about the possibility of making a deposit, for example when reserving a hotel room or a rental car," Peucker explained the plans to expand the Girocard functions, according to dpa (as of December 3).
"And also about consistently bringing the Girocard to the smartphone and opening it up for in-app payments."
The Girocard is to be upgraded.

It was not known when exactly the new function should come: “It is not yet the moment to name a fixed schedule.
Preparations are underway," she said, according to the report.
Should consumers expect that the additional functions of the Girocard will cost them something?
"Each institute decides for itself on its product and pricing policy," Peucker replied, according to dpa, and at the same time said: "Payment functions are in competition, there are alternatives for customers.

Germany's banks and savings banks also want to make their payment options more attractive by integrating the Girocard into a common online payment process, as the report states.
"The technical preparations have been completed, now the offer is being made available to customers," said Peucker, according to dpa, summarizing the current status of this topic.
"The first retailer is already offering it."
