There are 22.7 million benefits of the Italian pension system in force as at 31 December 2021, disbursed to 16 million people, for an expenditure of 313 billion.

, explaining that
in 2021 pension expenditure increased by 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous year
(in 2020 +2.3 points) and represents 17.6% of GDP (it was 18.5% in 2020 and 16.7% in 2019).
The trend of the main indicators is affected by the effects of the pandemic which has had a significant impact not only on mortality, but also on the labor market and on GDP.
