With the onset of snow and ice, it becomes increasingly important to have a winterproof car.

An ADAC expert explains how this can be done easily and inexpensively.

Bremen – The temperatures are falling, winter is here – and with it comes snow and ice on Germany's roads.

According to the German weather service, we are facing a real snowstorm and minus 20 degrees.

It is important to have a winterproof car to get through the cold season safely.

Nils Linge from ADAC Weser-Ems has tips on how drivers don't end up in a ditch.

According to Linge, now is the time to winterize your car.

And: Every owner can check some of the basic rules at home and are quickly done with a few simple steps.

  • Put on winter or all-season tires:

It is now illegal to drive with the wrong tire selection.

  • Test the

winter tires for tread depth and age

  • Check ice scraper

    for damage

  • Door seals and rubber from wiper blades grow

  • Pack de-icer

    for emergencies

  • Pack a blanket

if you end up in a traffic jam or otherwise have to stay in the car for hours

  • If you don't feel like scratching after a frosty night:

put a protective film on the windscreen.

According to ADAC experts Linge, on the other hand, is absolutely taboo: start the engine, turn on the blower and maybe have a cup of coffee.

“That's not the case, because the vehicle takes much longer to get air out.

    It's also banned," Linge said.

In addition to these simple and inexpensive tips, which can also be done at home in a few simple steps, according to ADAC expert Linge, a visit to the workshop at the beginning of winter can also be useful.

If you don't have the means or the knowledge to do so yourself, you can have a number of important winter safety tests carried out by professionals there.

In this way, a little more safety can be achieved when there is a risk of ice and snowfall.

Make your car safe for the winter: you can have it done in the workshop

  • Check battery capacity:

"Cars that won't start due to defective batteries is the main reason why the road patrol has to be called out in winter," explains Nils Linge.

  • Determining the freezing point of the window protection agent

    .

Linge: "Often you poured in summer antifreeze in the summer.

But of course that is not enough, because otherwise the container will freeze.”

  • Carry out a light test

: either by simply walking the vehicle around or professionally on the test stand.

The list of options for checking the car is long.

But for Linge it is particularly important that vehicle owners deal with their car, check it and thus know whether their vehicle is ready for the winter.
