The season of the most popular fruit in Israel is indeed summer, and now apparently it's already winter, but a new study found a reason to include this delicious fruit in our regular menu

Although the peak of summer is behind us and grapes are already hard to find in the market, a new study found that it is worth continuing to eat them even out of season.

Scientists found that people who ate two and a quarter cups of grapes every day for two weeks showed more resistance against damage from ultraviolet light to their skin.

The study found that natural components, called polyphenols, may be responsible for these beneficial effects.

About a third of the participants in the study published in the journal Antioxidants suffered from a certain level of resistance to ultraviolet light after eating grapes.

About 10 percent of them still had some resistance after they stopped eating grapes for four weeks, suggesting that some people build up resistance to sunburn after eating grapes.

The same three metabolites, or molecules produced by the body, were present in the participants' urine at much lower levels among those who developed resistance to ultraviolet light.

One of them, called 2-deoxyribose, is a particularly strong indicator of reducing sun damage.

"The phrase 'let your food be your medicine and medicine be your food' dates back to the time of Hippocrates. Now, 2,500 years later, as demonstrated by this human study with grapes, we are still learning the reality of that statement," says lead author John Pezzoto, professor and dean at the University of Western New England, in a press release.

Previous studies have shown that grapes help prevent sunlight from damaging people's skin, and the new study is based on them.

For the current study, the researchers recruited 29 people and fed them two and a quarter cups of grape powder for two weeks.

The team measured their skin's response to ultraviolet light before and after eating grapes for two weeks by calculating the amount of ultraviolet radiation that caused visible redness after 24 hours.

The team also analyzed the intestines, blood samples and urine samples of the participants.

In Israel, an average of 163 new melanoma patients are diagnosed every month, 98 percent of them from the Jewish sector.

About 15 patients die from the disease every month.

Besides melanoma, thousands of cases of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are also discovered in Israel every year.

Many skin cancers are related to UV radiation from the sun and about 90 percent of skin aging is due to excessive exposure to the sun.
