When asked about cancer, telemedicine or even prevention, the French oscillate between optimism and skepticism.

On the occasion of the Big Bang Santé, Ifop, in partnership with

Le Figaro

, surveyed a sample of 1012 people, representative of French people aged 18 and over.

When asked about cancer, telemedicine or even prevention, the French oscillate between optimism and skepticism.

“Would you say that we can cure cancer more today?

A

few years ago, the question might have seemed absurd, or even out of place.

Recent advances in oncology research have changed the game.

If cancer remains the leading cause of premature death in France, a large majority of respondents believe that there are more hopes for a cure today than in the past.

Invited to comment on the results live, the director of Ifop, Frédéric Dabi, sees in it the mark of

“strong optimism of the French with regard to medical science”

, despite the fears conveyed by the disease.

No plebiscite for e-health

Hereditary cancers, although in fact a minority, remain very significant in the collective imagination.

Genetics is thus designated as the first cause of the occurrence of cancer, although the importance of stress and pollution is not minimized.

Reducing risk factors is the whole point of the prevention strategy promoted by the government.

But are the French ready to adopt a healthier lifestyle to live better?

If sticking to a balanced diet and regular physical exercise does not pose a problem for the majority (over 60%), reducing alcohol and tobacco consumption finds fewer volunteers.

And it is not certain that the communication campaigns of the public authorities manage to convince the "bad pupils": a third of the French people questioned consider them ineffective.

Speaking of efficiency, how is telemedicine perceived, boosted by the Covid-19 epidemic?

Here too, the French questioned are circumspect.

For 80% of them, the teleconsultation is not worth a traditional consultation in contact with the practitioner.

"The attachment of the French to the patient-doctor relationship is obvious"

, notes Frédéric Dabi.

Unsurprisingly, it is among 18-25 year olds, often familiar with digital solutions, that e-health gathers the most followers.

Nearly one in two young people do not see any difference between a classic medical act and its “2.0” version.

Many of them (35%) even use connected objects to monitor their state of health on a daily basis.

Without however being able to speak of a plebiscite.
