“Boring and narcissistic”: the reactions of the English press to the documentary of Meghan and Harry

2022-12-09T10:03:16.923Z

On the lookout, the English media hastened to dissect the Netflix series devoted to the Sussexes, put online this Thursday morning.

Their “truth” in a documentary: in

Harry & Meghan

,

on Netflix since Thursday, December 8, the Sussexes settle their accounts.

First with the British tabloids, which they accuse of "destroying" them as they did with Diana.

Then with the royal family, whom they blame for never having accepted the American actress, mixed race and divorced, and whom they suspect of racism.

Netflix had planned the coup and knew the media fallout from such a show, oh so dreaded by Buckingham.

The Guardian

, the BBC,

The Independent

,

The Times

… In the UK, all the eminent media were on deck this Thursday at 8:01 a.m. (London time), to publish the first accounts.

Because the secret had been well kept, and no one was aware of the (possible) revelations of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

A “boring and narcissistic” series

Predictably, the conservative press has not been kind.

The Daily Telegraph

calls it "a one-sided, uncompromising story", while

The Spectator

- more virulently - describes Meghan and Harry's documentary series as "boring and narcissistic".

The

Times

, which devoted a live to the event, for its part, wishes to contradict a precision of the banner seen from the first minute of the show.

Which claims that the royal family did not wish to comment on the documentary, which Buckingham Palace denied during the day by indicating that it had not been “approached” by the production team.

This announcement from the Palace did not only react to the

The

Daily Mail

, at war with Meghan and Harry for years, has also made its headlines.

"Royals retaliate: Palace source says no royals have been contacted by Netflix series," reads the tabloid's online front page.

A “nauseous” spectacle

On the left,

The Independent

is more factual.

The English daily retains that the couple mainly addresses racism, the media and their meeting.

And note more unprecedented facts: the interview with Doria Ragland, the mother of Meghan Markle, as well as the dissemination of rare images of their children.

“Does Meghan and Harry’s Netflix documentary live up to expectations?

Well, within the first five minutes we saw a makeup-free Meghan with her hair wrapped in a towel crying into her phone camera – so I'm going to say yes,” reporter Jessie Thompson said.

But it's probably in the columns of the tabloid

The Sun

that we find the most murderous chronicle with regard to the Sussexes.

It is signed by the very controversial Piers Morgan.

The television host, for whom Meghan Markle is the source of all the Windsors' ills, speaks of a "sickening" sight.

"Warning: you'll need a bucket to vomit, or tissues for those times when you laugh so hard (and not for the reasons our heroic freedom fighters desire...) that tears will drip on your face,” he wrote in a vitriolic column.

"Compared to their whining at Oprah, unleashed like a machine gun of mostly false 'truth bombs', [this series] was predictably boring, replete with cliches and sycophancy that fuel the familiar and tiresome narrative of

a cruelly oppressed couple driven out of Britain by a wickedly racist media, a wickedly racist royal family and a wickedly racist public.”

From Piers Morgan, we expected no less.

From Meghan and Harry, maybe more.
