Activists from the »Last Generation« climate protest movement blocked a street in downtown Mainz for several hours on Friday morning.
According to the police, a total of six participants sat down on Binger Straße during the blockade on the Alicenbrücke near Mainz Central Station, and four of them stuck to it.
As reported by SWR, some of the activists had glued their hands to the road with a particularly stubborn adhesive mixture.
In one case, construction workers had to use a cut-off grinder and a hammer drill to remove a participant's hand from the road.
Photos showed how the hand was finally removed along with a piece of asphalt.
According to the SWR, it was the first action of the "last generation" in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The group has been causing a stir across Germany for months with its blockades.
It was only on Thursday that a runway at Munich Airport was temporarily paralyzed after activists cut a hole in a fence and thus penetrated the airport premises.
The capital's airport BER has already been paralyzed.
Activists from the group also repeatedly blocked traffic axes in German cities, causing traffic jams.
Among other things, the police use cooking oil to loosen glued activists from the asphalt.
In Mainz, however, the tried-and-tested means were apparently not enough.
According to SWR, the hole in the road surface caused by the use of special equipment was repaired immediately.
The route was reopened around 11 a.m. after about three hours.
According to the broadcaster, a total of around 80 emergency services were involved on site and, among other things, in the large-scale diversion of traffic.
According to the police, it is currently being checked whether the costs for damage and the deployment costs can be charged to the participants in the meeting.
