A brave Connecticut resident is being praised online and named "Mother of the Year" after she bravely saved her daughter from a rabid raccoon that latched onto her leg.

A video of the incident has garnered 19 million views on Twitter and several million more on TikTok, with viewers praising her for her courage in the face of the ferocious animal.

"I heard her screaming and I rushed over to see what was going on. I thought maybe she slammed the door with her hand, I didn't expect to see a raccoon attack her," Logan Kelsey McNamara told Storyful about the attack, which happened earlier this month in Ashford.

"If I didn't have the documentation, I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what happened there. Everything happened so quickly."

She posted the video on Facebook at her daughter's request.

This is how it looks:

The video, captured on the home's security camera, opens with 5-year-old daughter Riley standing on the front porch of the home preparing to board the school bus.

Suddenly, a giant raccoon appears out of nowhere, attacks her and grabs one of her legs, refusing to let go.

"I was planning to get on the bus and a raccoon was there and tried to attack me," little Riley told the local WFSB network, "he didn't want to get off my leg."

In the video, the girl is seen screaming in terror and trying to remove the raccoon from her without success.

Logan rushed to her, tore the raccoon off its leg and instead of throwing it in the yard - first made sure to get her daughter to a safe place and keep the neighbors away.

The mother is seen holding the raccoon's neck for many seconds and finally throwing it away - only after her daughter went inside and the bystanders moved away.

The video ends when the mother enters her house and the raccoon continues on his way.

Logan train Her daughter and she were left with scratches, but they are in good condition.

She attributes the lack of injuries to the fact that her daughter was wearing jeans and not leggings like she usually does.

The weekend after the incident, animal control services searched the woods for the attacking raccoon, but it was not found.

It is not clear if the raccoon suffered from rabies, so the two went to the hospital to receive vaccinations as a precaution.

They were asked to return for examination every two days for the next two weeks to monitor the scratches.

As we mentioned, the viewers were very impressed by the brave act of the mother and called her "mother of the year".

"This mother is amazing," one wrote and another added: "The power of the protective mother is no joke."

Wildlife experts also praised her actions.

Geoff Crocker, a wildlife biologist with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, told FOX 61 the raccoon definitely looked sick and the mother did the right thing to protect her family.

"The mother behaved in a very heroic manner," he said.

"I think she did everything right. By avoiding being bitten, warning the neighbors to keep their distance and taking the girl to safety."

Some viewers chose to focus on the raccoon's calm reaction after being thrown into the yard: "I expected him to pounce on the family again but he just walked away completely calm."

Despite the outpouring of compliments, Logan said it was a terrifying moment and that she would never again let her children go outside without an adult.
