What was the extent of the massacres of Abdul Hamid II between 1894 and 1896?
The massacres that were committed between 1894 and 1896 against the Armenian population are clearly to be distinguished from the genocide of 1915-1916.
They are of another nature, certainly generalized – more than 200,000 victims – but mainly targeting men, as well as real estate, production tools.
They came to complete the policy implemented by Sultan Abdülhamid II, which aimed to reduce the demographic weight of the Ottoman Armenian population, estimated at 3.4 million at the beginning of the 1890s.
1891 marked a turning point.
That year, the sultan created squadrons of Kurdish irregulars, the
hamidiye regiments,
from tribal backgrounds, whose main mission was to harass Armenian subjects in the eastern provinces, that is to say the historical Armenian territory. .
