(ANSA) - LIMA, DECEMBER 10 - Numerous demonstrators marched through the streets of Lima demanding the release of ex-president Pedro Castillo after an alleged failed coup d'état, pending the formation of a new government announced for today by the new president of Peru Dina Boluarte.
Boluarte told reporters that if the situation "justifies it", the government will consult with Congress to hold an early presidential vote and urged protesters "to calm down".
Demonstrations continued in the capital yesterday, with protesters blocking roads with stones, wood and burning tires demanding early elections.
Traffic also interrupted along the southern Pan-American highway which connects Peru and Chile. (ANSA).
