Aldi Nord has been trying to gain a foothold abroad for a long time, but many branches in a neighboring German country are now closing after more than 40 years.

Kassel – The German discounter giant Aldi also wants to increase its profits abroad and stand out from the competition.

Aldi Nord branches were opened in Belgium and the Netherlands as early as the 1970s.

In another neighboring German country, all branches have to close – after 45 years.

In Denmark, Aldi will now say goodbye to all of its 188 branches, the discounter said in a press release, as also reported by hna.de.

The first Aldi discounters in Denmark were opened in 1977, followed two years later by the first branch in Norway.

According to the company, Aldi Nord served as a model for the discounter Rema 1000.

However, the branches are said not to have been profitable and are now being sold.

Aldi Nord closes Danish branches: losses in the millions

The branches in Denmark have been making losses for years, reports the

Handelsblatt

.

After careful consideration, the Aldi Nord Group made the difficult decision to leave the Danish market.

This was stated by the managing director of Aldi Denmark, Finn Tang, in a joint statement.

One would like to concentrate on the remaining eight European markets in the future.

As early as 2017, Aldi Nord tried to reverse the trend by closing 32 stores, but without success.

Investments in the existing network and extensive advertising campaigns did not lead to a sufficient improvement.

Last year, Aldi Nord in Denmark generated sales of the equivalent of 630 million euros, a minus of 46 million euros, writes the

Aldi Nord is closing Danish branches: what is happening to the branches now

Now 114 of the 188 Danish markets are sold to Rema 1000.

The remaining branches are to be closed or sold to other retailers over the course of the next year.

A purchase price was not mentioned.

In total, Aldi had around 2,800 employees in Denmark, around 1,600 of whom will be taken on by Rema 1000.

After Belgium and the Netherlands, Denmark was the third European country in which Aldi Nord opened branches.

There are now over 5,000 branches in nine European countries.

The profit from the sale of the Danish stores is to be invested in growth and modernization elsewhere.

Among other things, the discounter plans to introduce its own delivery service and change the cash register systems in Aldi branches.
