The region of Thrace is located between the borders of Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria and if we focus on Greece, it lies in the north-east of the country and is mostly based on agriculture.

This area is characterized by many towns and villages and the authentic character of the locals is something that is hard to miss, therefore a trip to the markets in this area will put you in a magical atmosphere.

The influence of the countries it borders is evident also in the food, so unlike what you will taste in other restaurants in Greece, here you will also feel a Turkish and Bulgarian influence.

Although the recommended months for the trip are May and June, the weather in Thrace is pleasant throughout the year.

This area is mentioned in Greek mythology as the birthplace of Orpheus, the son of Calliope and in more recent history there is also a close connection to the Jewish community.

A large Jewish community lived in this area for about 500 years and the people of this community were involved in trading businesses such as tobacco and silk (by the way, to this day you can see in the villages how they are produced) until World War II came and everything changed for them - the area was occupied by the Bulgarians who sent the Jews Straight to the extermination camp Treblinka in Poland.

Today the community no longer exists and only small memorial sites, cemeteries and small synagogues remain in cities such as Drama and Kastani.

Diversity is the best word to describe the region of Thrace which, beyond historical sites, also offers its visitors a breathtaking nature expressed in landscapes such as snowy mountains, rivers, green valleys and pristine beaches.

Beyond that, the local community, consisting mainly of farmers, will welcome you.

One of the main cities in Thrace is Alexandropolis (so named after Alexander Caesar of Russia) and compared to the other cities in the region it is considered modern, therefore if you want to stay in more luxurious hotels this is the city where you should stay and from where you should go on the various trips.

The beach in the city is among its main attractions because it is not only beautiful but also lively.

In the coastal area there is a promenade, restaurants and even a lighthouse built in the 19th century.

Another central city is Kastani and if you come there it is recommended to visit the food market, although it is also characterized by great restaurants.

In terms of how to get there - in order to get to Alexandroupolis you will have to land in Thessaloniki and from there take a bus that arrives within 3 hours, or alternatively rent a car.
