Child benefit will be increased on January 1, 2023.

The highest relief for over 25 years - how parents get the subsidy.

Berlin – From citizens' allowances to emergency gas aid to more housing allowances: the year 2023 promises a multitude of changes.

Another measure: the increase in child benefit announced on November 25th.

The federal government is reacting to the persistently high cost of living and is offering families further financial help in times of energy crisis and inflation.

There had not been such a high increase in child benefit for over 25 years.

The child benefit increases.

How much the subsidy is from January and how families receive it.

State benefit:

child support

Who will receive it:

parents with children

Amount of payout per month:

At least 219 euros

Maximum rate per month per child:

250 euro

Relief for families: Child benefit is to be increased on January 1, 2023

In December 2022, families will still have to make do with the familiar benefit rate.

Child benefit is paid out by mid-December.

How much money then ends up in the account is fixed and based on regulations that have not been adjusted since 2021.

So there are 219 euros for the first and second child.

There is 225 euros per month for the third child, while there is a monthly allowance of 250 euros for the fourth child.

In 2021, child benefit increased by 15 euros per child.

A financial relief that could have compensated for inflation was not made possible in the following years.

A circumstance that mainly affects families with low incomes.

Federal politicians are reacting to this and are promising to change the amount of child benefit in just a few days.

According to the Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), there is no alternative due to the “current situation”.

"Increased prices for groceries, rent, energy" still determine the market and accordingly "the current situation still demands a lot from low-income families" - so from January 1, 2023 they should be relieved.

Increase in child benefit as of January 1, 2023:

What is the child benefit from 2023?

From January 2023, families will receive an additional 250 euros per month for the first three children.

To what extent parents will be relieved by the increased child benefit in 2023:

Child benefit for the first and second child is currently 219 euros.

For the third child there is still 225 euros in December 2022.

From January 2023, parents will receive 250 euros per month for the first three children.

According to the federal government, this corresponds to an increase of around 31 euros per month for the first and second child.

For the third child, families are relieved by a further 25 euros.

"One of the most important family benefits": This is how families receive child benefit in 2023

In a statement published by the federal government, Minister for Family Affairs Paus describes child benefit as "one of the most important family benefits".

Politicians want to do justice to this status from January 2023 in particular.

"Families have to spend more on their livelihood than households without children."

With 250 euros provided for each child, the increase in child benefit as of January 1 is correspondingly high.

Federal policy is thus putting forward a measure that is intended to “relieve families significantly more”.

In addition, they should be offered a "reliable" service that "can be permanently included in the family budget" - in 2023 then with the highest increase in child benefit since 1996. The comparison shows the extent to which families have more money available from January: According to the federal government, there is for the first and second child 31 euros additionally.

Extrapolated, this means that a family with two children will have 744 euros more at their disposal than in 2022.

There is an additional 25 euros per month for the third child, meaning that families with three children can expect annual additional income of 1,044 euros.

According to information from the employment agency, families are entitled to child benefit if the child is under the age of 18 and lives in the family household - with registered residence in Germany or the EU.

The distribution of the child benefit takes place via a payment.

Parents will then also receive the supplement provided on January 1st in the form of the child benefit increase in their account.

Child benefit, child allowance and child bonus: "Support in times of exceptional stress"

When the child benefit is paid depends on the so-called child benefit number.

Parents can find this on the child benefit notice, among other things.

The respective final digits of the child benefit numbers assign families specific payment dates - including January 2023, when the next child benefit payment is due.

This is accompanied by the right to additional supplements.

With the so-called immediate surcharge, there is an additional 20 euros per month for families.

This benefit is aimed at families with children, adolescents and young adults who live in poverty.

Single parents and low-income families are also entitled to a child supplement.

The maximum amount of this benefit is 250 euros per month from January 1st.

According to the employment office, it is "additional financial support for working parents who earn enough for themselves, but who are unable or barely able to meet all of the family's needs".

The child bonus promises further financial support.

Families receive a one-off payment of 100 euros per child.

The child bonus is "usually paid automatically by the responsible family benefits office," writes the employment agency on its website - an "additional support for families in times of extraordinary stress".
