The Peruvian supreme court has rejected the request for release presented by the lawyers of former president

Pedro Castillo

, who is in pre-trial detention on charges of 'rebellion' after a failed attempt to dissolve Parliament.

The sentence rejecting the appeal presented by Castillo against the pre-trial detention for rebellion and conspiracy was read by Judge César San Martín, president of the permanent criminal section of the Supreme Court.

The magistrate held that the crime of rebellion does not occur solely through insurrection in arms, as claimed by Castillo's defense, but also in an attempt to disempower democratic institutions, and in order to concentrate all power in one person .

Therefore the former head of state will have to serve the seven days of preliminary detention imposed by judge Juan Carlos Checkley Soria and requested by the public prosecutor.

The period expires today at 12.42 local time (19.42 Italian time).

It is possible that to prevent Castillo from being freed, justice will establish another period of preventive arrest, pending the development of the investigation.

Shortly before attending the hearing in Lima and learning from the Supreme Court that his request for immediate release had been rejected, former President Pedro Castillo released a new handwritten message from his cell in which he asks the police and the army to lay down your weapons.

The letter, released via Twitter, claims that "in the face of the serious episodes of massacres of my people, I urge the national police and the armed forces to lay down their arms in order to put an end to the bloodshed of my people".

Then addressing the president Dina Boluarte who was her deputy in the government, he calls her "Mrs. Dina", adding: "Look at the place you occupy. I hold you and all the collaborators who accompany you responsible for the ferocious attack on my fellow citizens " "

I appeal to the people - he then said - to remain vigilant and optimistic.

Signed, Pedro Castillo, constitutional president of Peru".
