With the federal government's third relief package, students should finally be relieved.

When will the 200 euros end up in the account?

Hamburg – Students without employment were initially not considered by the federal government in the relief packages.

Only as part of the third relief package was a flat-rate energy price for students provided.

However, unlike employees and pensioners, the amount is only 200 euros.

Even with the energy flat rate for pensioners, less than 300 euros arrive on the account.

But when will the energy flat rate for students be paid out at all?

While the energy allowance for pensioners has now been paid - if not, pensioners can apply for back payment of the energy allowance - the students have to continue to wait.

At the beginning of the month, the federal government officially decided on the 200 euro energy flat rate for students and technical students.

With the announcement, it was said that the money should be paid out at the beginning of the new year, i.e. in winter.

Who gets the student energy allowance?

All students who are enrolled at a university in Germany as of December 1, 2022 are entitled to the energy flat-rate of 200 euros.

This also includes doctoral students, dual students, part-time students and foreign students.

But with the payment of the energy flat rate for students in January 2023, things are looking rather bad at the moment.

A quick payment of the 200 euros is currently "unrealistic", it was said recently by the Minister of Education.

The reason for this is the poor preparation of the energy flat rate for students on the part of the federal government.

The Ministers of Education therefore demanded that the government “legislate to make improvements” to the energy flat rate, the Tagesschau reported, among other things.

Among other things, it was also about the financing of the money.

The states should first lay out the sum and later reclaim it from the federal government.

When the energy flat rate will actually be paid to the students remains unknown for the time being.

There are similar delays with the 49-euro ticket, which was originally supposed to be available from January 1, 2023.

It is now clear that the 49-euro ticket will not be available until April 1, 2023 at the earliest. Here, the financing was particularly problematic.

Is the student energy allowance taxed?

Although the students only get 200 euros instead of 300 euros as pensioners or employees, students do not pay tax on the energy flat rate.

The money is tax-free, non-seizable and is not used to collect costs in child and youth welfare.

So it will be a while before the students actually get paid the 200 euros energy flat rate.

It is also still unclear how the students have to apply for the money.

Because unlike the energy flat rate for pensioners and employees, the money will not simply automatically appear in the students' accounts.

How can students apply for the energy allowance?

A website is planned on which students can easily apply online for the 200 euro energy flat rate.

The digital application platform "Bafög-Digital" of the state of Saxony-Anhalt should serve as a model.

When the website will be launched is not yet certain.

Energy flat rate of 200 euros also for technical students

Not only students, but also technical students should receive the energy flat rate of 200 euros.

This applies to technical students and vocational school students with the aim of a two-year professional qualification.

Here, too, the deadline is December 1, 2022 - technical students must be registered at a training center in Germany on this day.
