Istat: +247 thousand employed, unemployed under 2 million

Decline of 12 thousand employed on an annual basis compared to the previous quarter. The number of those who are not looking for work convinced they cannot find it is increasing. Persons employed in Italy in the third quarter of 2022 decreased by 12 thousand units compared to the second (-0.1%) reaching 23 million 126 thousand, following the decrease in fixed-term employees (-59 thousand,) not offset by the increase of those with permanent contracts (+34,000) and independents (+12,000).

Istat notes this, explaining that on the basis of non-seasonally adjusted data, there was an increase of 247 thousand employed persons in the third quarter of 2021. The number of unemployed also decreased compared to the previous quarter (-52 thousand, -2.6%).

Compared to the third quarter of 2021, the unemployed decreased by 284 thousand units.



The number of those who are not looking for work convinced they cannot find it is increasing: Istat certifies it according to which in the third quarter there were 1,107,000 discouraged people, an increase of 8.4% over the same period of 2021 (+86 thousand ).

This category increases among men (+11.6%) more than among women (+6.2%).



Persons seeking employment in Italy fell below two million in the third quarter to 1,981,000, for the first time since 2011. This is what emerges from the Istat labor market tables (seasonally adjusted data), according to which the employment rate in the third quarter it fell to 7.9% (-0.2 points on the previous quarter, -1.1 points on the year), the lowest value since 2009. The employment rate is stable compared to the previous quarter at 60.2 %, on the highest levels since 2004, the beginning of the historical series.

Compared to the third quarter of 2021, the employment rate grew by 1.1 points.



In fact, gross wages per employee increased in the third quarter of 2022 by 0.3% compared to the same period of 2021. This was noted by Istat, underlining that the increase compared to the previous quarter was 0.1%.

Gross contractual cash wages for the total economy grew on a trend basis by 0.9%.

The figure is much lower than that of the price increase.
