A. was born with brain tissue leaking into her nose - and was operated on at Shaare Zedek • Her parents were filled with happiness: "We received our daughter's life as a gift"

A., a two-year-old toddler, arrived at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem with an unusual bump.

To the astonishment of the doctors, it was brain tissue that leaked into the nasal cavity.

The specialists in the neurosurgery department performed a complex brain surgery that saved her life.

On the day of her birth, a prominent blue mark was discovered on the bridge of A's nose.

Her mother says that she is a vital and healthy child, and over time the bump did not interfere with her daily functioning.

Despite the fear that the findings were not normal, the community doctors reassured her parents and determined that there was no cause for concern.

A few months later, the toddler's mother decided that she wanted to continue to find out the source of the mark and turned to several experts.

At the age of two, the toddler came for imaging tests at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, where the MRI scans revealed a rare finding.

"diagnosed in time"

The experts of the neurosurgery department, in collaboration with the diagnostic radiology department, discovered a congenital structural change that led to part of her brain sliding into the nasal cavity.

"The mark was interpreted as a kind of small birthmark, and it was obviously difficult to think of a diagnosis of brain tissue," says Dr. Nevo Margalit, director of the department.

"This is a rare finding," reassures Dr. Margalit. "It is important not to cause concern in any parent." In the surgery, the opening of the skull and the reconstruction of the base were performed, by closing the floor of the skull, thus avoiding leakage of brain tissue and the risk of infection and inflammation. "Fortunately, she was diagnosed in time, She recovered well and returned to a full routine," concludes Dr. Margalit.

"We are grateful that we received our daughter's life as a gift," the toddler's parents said.

"A will return to the educational setting soon. We want to thank Dr. Margalit and the entire team for the quick diagnosis and professional treatment."
