"Superman" is coming back - but without Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill's time as the hero in blue and red is over: screenwriter James Gunn is planning his sequel to the "Superman" adaptation with a different actor. Apparently Cavill hadn't expected that.

Filmmaker James Gunn (56, »Suicide Squad«) is writing a new »Superman« film – for which British actor Henry Cavill (39) will not slip into the superhero cape again.

"In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill," Gunn said on Twitter.

Cavill wrote in an Instagram post that he was saddened by the decision but respected it.

"My time to wear the cloak is up."

Cavill only announced to his fans in October that he would slip into the superhero costume again.

His cameo appearance as Superman in the film "Black Adam", which was released in cinemas in October, was only "a small foretaste".

Precisely because the DC studio asked him to make this announcement in October, the most recent decision is "not the easiest" for him, says Cavill.

"But that's life."

Cavill has played Superman since 2013

James Gunn tweeted that he had been in discussions with Cavill about "a number of exciting opportunities for future collaboration."

He did not elaborate on what the projects mentioned are about.

Cavill first played the DC hero in 2013's Man of Steel.

He also starred in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).
