Whenever a James Cameron film hits theaters, you should watch closely.
13 (!) years after the record-breaking film "Avatar: Aufbruch nach Pandora", "Avatar: The Way of Water" is the first of four further films planned to be released in cinemas and provides a new optical benchmark.
But: Can the story also deliver?
If you ask people about "Avatar: Departure for Pandora" you often hear that they don't remember much about the film, that they didn't particularly like it, that they refer to "Ferngully" or "Dances With Wolves", blue cats or Smurfs .
But it's no coincidence that director James Cameron managed to break his "Titanic" record from 1997 with his own film and gross another two billion dollars in the worldwide box office.
In the meantime, there was a new friendly rivalry with "Avengers: Endgame" and some re-releases that led to the postponement and retrieval of the theatrical crown.
2009 is also 13 years ago.
Some feel that this is too long for a sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick, on the other hand, proved just this year that even 30 years is just smoke and mirrors, and before that, Star Wars: The Force Awakens also showed what a valuable tool nostalgia can be in the box office.
