(ANSA) - BRASILIA, DECEMBER 15 - The elected president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Sllva, wants to re-establish relations with Venezuela, after the interruption of diplomatic relations decided by the outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro.
"On January 1, we will send a charge d'affaires to reoccupy the properties we have in Venezuela and reopen the embassy," announced Lula's future foreign minister, Mauro Vieira.
The transitional government team would also like Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro at Lula's inauguration ceremony in January 2023. But with the current breakdown in diplomatic ties, Maduro could only fly over Brazilian airspace after Lula is sworn in.
"We don't know if President Maduro will be able to be present (at the ceremony), but contacts are being made" with Caracas to resolve the situation, explained Vieira.
