In Bad Karlshafen, masked soldiers completed an orientation march, and the police were not informed either. The result: horror and tears at a nearby school.

In the small Hessian town of Bad Karlshafen near Kassel, residents informed the police on Tuesday because they had observed how armed and masked men in camouflage clothing ran through the city center.

What they didn't know was that they were soldiers from the Bundeswehr who were doing an exercise.

This is reported, among others, by the »Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine« (HNA) and the »Frankfurter Neue Presse«.

The police, who said they knew nothing about the maneuver, sent patrol cars to a nearby school.

"We had to calm down a lot of children because they were scared and crying," quotes the HNA Driton Mazrekaj, head of the Marie Durand School, an integrated comprehensive school.

"Acted with the thought of an emergency"

Since the morning classes were just over at the time, some students were on their way to the bus stop, headmaster Mazrekaj said, according to the HNA.

Teachers brought the children and young people back to school on the instructions of the police.

"We acted with the thought of an emergency." The school management also informed the neighboring elementary school.

After about 45 minutes the all-clear would have been given.

According to the Frankfurter Neue Presse, psychologists were at both schools on Wednesday to talk to the children about what had happened.

"We very much regret that our peace at school was so severely disturbed," writes headmaster Mazrekaj on the school's website.

»I would like to emphasize that there was never any danger to your children or the school staff at the school.«

Information about hiking trails

The Bundeswehr meanwhile confirmed that 27 soldiers had been to an orientation march in Bad Karlshafen.

As the HNA writes, they belong to the second company of Supply Battalion 7 in Augustdorf (North Rhine-Westphalia).

The city was chosen as a training location because it was a completely unknown area for the soldiers.

"We had no indication that an orientation march could have such consequences," the newspaper quoted Bad Karlshafen Mayor Marcus Dittrich as saying.

According to the mayor, two representatives of the Bundeswehr were in the town hall at the end of November and asked for information about hiking trails.
