70 cups of coffee equals half an hour of ironing with a steam iron?
If you do without the steam function when ironing, you can save a lot of energy.
An expert has tips ready so that the laundry is nice and smooth even without steam.
Munich – Switch off lights, avoid standby mode for technical devices or attach LED lights to the Christmas tree instead of conventional light bulbs.
Energy can be saved in the household with little effort.
The more places people are careful, the more noticeable it is in the down payment.
According to the Federal Environment Agency
, up to 90 percent of the energy can be saved even when ironing
.
Energy saving: Half an hour of ironing is equivalent to preparing 70 cups of coffee
Ironing costs a comparatively large amount of energy.
While you can prepare about 70 cups of coffee or shave around 2000 times with one kilowatt hour of electricity, the amount of electricity is only enough for half an hour with a steam iron.
At least that's what the
HEA - professional association for efficient energy
use - calculated.
The "steam iron requires electricity to heat the iron itself and also to generate steam," according to the website of the Federal Environment Agency.
The conversion of water into steam accounts for around 90 percent of electricity consumption.
"From an environmental point of view, it is therefore advisable to limit the generation of steam and thus the consumption of electricity."
Ironing is easier with steam, but you can also iron without it and saves energy
In order to save electricity, you should avoid using steam when ironing.
Does the laundry still get smooth?
Yes, says Sonja Grau, fashion consultant from Send near Ulm.
The steam effect can be created by dampening the garment with a little water mist from a spray bottle.
Or you can place a thin, damp cotton tea towel on the garment and iron over it.
It used to be called steaming.
Save energy when ironing – keep your eyes open when buying an iron
From a quality and safety perspective, the Federal Environment Agency recommends paying attention to the following functions when buying a steam iron:
overheat protection
An indicator light that shows whether the steam iron is still heating up or whether the temperature has been reached.
A steam regulator: This only generates steam when the iron is used, for example when it is moved.
A temperature controller that indicates which temperature is suitable for which materials.
A water tank with a large filling opening for easy filling.
A spray nozzle to spray the water from the tank onto the laundry just in front of the steam iron.
The automatic switch-off function.
An extra descaling function.

Steam iron or ironing station?
Incidentally, a steam iron is completely sufficient for private use, advises the Federal Environment Agency.
Ironing stations usually consume even more electricity than a steam iron.
Test results from Stiftung Warentest indicate that ironing stations have no advantages over steam irons in terms of ironing time.
