A method for making potatoes in the oven (@theptchef/)
It turns out that the addition of just one ingredient can make the potatoes in your oven crunchy on the outside and airy on the inside.
Chef Ollie Brandon, who shares his cooking videos on TikTok under the username @theptchef, raised the gauntlet when he revealed how he makes the "best baked potatoes in the world".
The chef discovered that his formula for crispy potatoes on the outside and soft on the inside involves adding... a teaspoon of baking soda during cooking.
In a video posted on his TikTok page, the chef bit into one of his crispy potatoes and they made a rather satisfying popping sound.
He described the sound as "the sound of the best roasted potatoes you've ever had."
The recipe was a success on social networks, with more than half a million likes and a hundred thousand shares.

He goes through the preparation steps one by one and explains: "Put one teaspoon of baking soda and salt in boiling water, cook your potatoes until they become soft, but do not fall apart."
When you add them at this stage, the baking soda breaks down the starch in the potatoes (called pectin) and brings it to the surface.
This helps create a crispy layer and gives the potatoes a stunning golden brown hue.
That is - the soda powder that dissolves in water turns the cooking water into an alkaline environment for the potatoes.
And the result is a change in the structure of the potato by breaking down the pectin, which creates a more layered surface, so that the crispy layers reach the depth of each piece of potato.
After the potatoes are soft (test with a fork), drain and shake them.
Holly added: "Next, finely chop rosemary and garlic and add to a pan with a lot of olive oil. Toast them until lightly golden and then strain the oil while spreading it over all the potatoes."
You'll be left with crunchy rosemary and garlic crumbs, but the chef clarifies: "Don't throw them away, we'll use them later."
Using the fresh oil, Holly spreads a coating on top of the potatoes before they are baked in the oven.
"Be sure to spread this oil all over the potatoes, add salt and pepper and then bake them at 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes," he said, "turn them over and bake them for another 20 to 30 minutes or until they're super crispy."
Finally, transfer your roasted potatoes to a bowl and top with the roasted garlic and rosemary crumbles.
Holly recommends adding a pinch of salt at this point as well, before mixing all the ingredients together.
