The calendrical beginning of winter (or the astronomical beginning of winter) depends on the position of the sun in relation to the earth.
The date corresponds to that of the winter solstice, which falls on this day in 2022.
“This year, the beginning of winter – synonymous with the winter solstice – is on December 21, at exactly 10:47 p.m.
This is also the shortest day in 2022,” the
Allgäuer Zeitung

For meteorologists, meanwhile, winter begins earlier, on December 1st.

Winter Solstice: When will the days get longer again?
The winter solstice, corresponding to the beginning of winter on the calendar, is the time when the sun is vertically above the southern tropic.
On this date, the sun is lower on the horizon than on any other day of the year.
This means that on the day of the winter solstice, the sun shines for just over eight hours, making it the shortest day of the year.
