With the turn of the year, citizens are faced with numerous unexpected costs.
These things will get more expensive in 2023.
Frankfurt – Inflation and the energy crisis are weighing heavily on people's wallets.
In order to counteract the rising costs of basic services, the government has launched a huge relief package and, from next year, citizen benefits.
This is intended to protect citizens from the growing burdens.
But between all of their good deeds, the government is also taking its toll: the contribution assessment ceilings for social insurance are rising, and the state will be grabbing a significantly larger piece of the cake when it comes to inheriting and giving away next year.
These and other financial burdens from 2023 can be found here.
Health insurance: Increasing contributions to social security from 2023
From the coming year, the contribution assessment limits in the social security funds will increase.
You determine the income level up to which amounts are calculated and deducted for the various areas of social security.
All income of insured persons above the contribution assessment limit is free of charge, since the amount is capped.
Healthcare | Gross salary 2022 (per year) | Gross salary 2023 (per year) |
---|---|---|
compulsory insurance limit | 5362.50 euros (64,350 euros) | 5550.00 euros (66,600 euros) |
contribution assessment limit | 4837.50 euros (58,050 euros) | 4987.50 euros (59,850 euros) |
The contribution assessment limits differ for health and long-term care insurance as well as for pension and unemployment insurance.
Until now, the monthly income limit for health and long-term care insurance was EUR 4,837.50 per month.
From 2023, this will increase by 150 euros to 4987.50 euros.
As the federal government announced, the compulsory insurance limit for statutory health insurance will also be raised.
pension and unemployment insurance | Gross salary 2022 (per year) | Gross salary 2023 (per year) |
---|---|---|
Contribution assessment limit in the east | 6750 euros (81,000 euros) | 7100 euros (85,200 euros) |
Contribution assessment ceiling in the west | 7050 euros (84,600 euros) | 7300 euros (87,600 euros) |
In the area of pension and unemployment insurance, the federal government is planning an increase of 250 euros.
Thus, the contribution assessment limit in the new federal states increases from 6750 euros to 7100 euros and in the old federal states from 7050 euros to 7300 euros.
Increases in inheritance and gift tax from January 2023
Inheriting and giving away will be significantly more expensive from 2023 - but only for houses and land.
The annual tax law provides for a passage according to which real estate should be revalued in the case of gifts and inheritances.
So far, the determined real estate values in the case of a gift or inheritance are often still below their actual market values.
This is set to change from 2023.
"The aim is to adjust the tax values to the current - high - real estate market price level," the
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
quotes tax expert Sibylle Barent from the central association "Haus & Grund".

It is not possible to say in general terms how much more expensive the transfer of a property will ultimately be.
"According to our estimates, you can roughly expect increases of 20 to 30 percent or more," says Barent.
Since the values of real estate have risen sharply in recent years, the allowances will probably be reached quickly.

Tobacco tax increases in 2023
The state has bad news for smokers at the turn of the year: As planned, the tobacco tax will be increased again in 2023.
This makes cigarettes significantly more expensive.
The increase goes back to a decision by the Bundestag in 2021, according to which the tax on tobacco products should be increased piece by piece.
Specifically, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance, this means an average price increase of around eight cents per year over the period from 2022 to 2026 for a pack of 20 cigarettes.
This year the tax on liquids for e-cigarettes and shisha tobacco for hookahs was introduced.
These tobacco products will also be affected by the tax increase from next year.
Homeowners insurance will be more expensive in 2023
Homeowners insurance premiums will also increase sharply from 2023.
The General Association of Insurers (GDV) announced in October that after the turn of the year the adjustment factor, for which residential building insurance with a variable replacement value is important, increased by 14.7 percent compared to the previous year.
The adjustment factor is published annually by the GDV and is based on the construction price index for residential buildings and the collective wage index for the construction industry.
So far, the increase in value has averaged only three percent.
Flight prices could increase in the coming year
Air travel could become significantly more expensive in the course of the next year - at least that's what the ADAC suspects.
According to this, flight prices should be up to 46 percent more expensive compared to 2022.
The Siwss International Air Lines (46.4 percent price increase), the German Lufthansa (40.8 percent) and Austrian Airlines (28.5 percent) perform particularly poorly in the forecast.
The rising flight prices are the result of several factors.
In addition to the growing desire to travel after the Corona years, high inflation and increased energy costs also play a decisive role.
