40 yeses were needed for the proposal to be approved: and instead the 34 votes in favor of the assembly did not allow the project to see the light (24 against).
"The vote must be taken into account, without ifs and buts, the proposal was rejected. No comments from me as is due in the democratic game" Ghirelli said hotly.
Then the announcement, in front of all the "men and women" of Lega Pro, because Ghirelli had worked with great dedication on the reform, believing in change: a proposal which, if passed, would have seen Serie C move to six groups with 10 teams each, with the top five finishing then in a promotion group consisting of ten teams and three groups, and the bottom five finishing in a relegation pool.
Direct promotions would have disappeared in favor of the playoff formula.
A turning point that Ghirelli was very keen on.
"By making the reform of the format, I also pushed to give a signal to the country, in the opposite direction to the negativity - his words in announcing his resignation -, to invest to change the trend, to move from a certain situation,
negative to a challenge to smile again and produce resources.
Serie C is a beautiful championship, full of history and emotion.
It has an urgency that needs to be answered, to indicate a strong project of economic sustainability and reconnection with young people.
