(by Silvia Lambertucci) (ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 17 - Over time there has been talk of Pontormo, Pinturicchio, Castiglione, Peruzzi.

And if it were Lorenzo de Medici the younger, the eldest son of Lorenzo the Magnificent and nephew of Pope Leo X, the boy who poses with Raphael in the famous "Portrait with a friend" in the Louvre?

The hypothesis is put forward by the art historian Claudia Viggiani, who explains her suggestive theory in an article just published in the magazine Finestre sull'arte.

She, from Viggiani, recalls the story of the painting, which entered the collection of the Parisian museum in 1792.

And she retraces the theses advanced over the years by various scholars on the identity of the second protagonist of the splendid painting,

not by chance placed in great evidence in the exhibition set up two years ago at the Scuderie del Quirinale for the 500th anniversary of the death of the brilliant painter from Urbino.

His identification hypothesis, he explains, is primarily based on similarity.

In his opinion, the physiognomic features of the young man portrayed next to the painter recall those of the Medici scion as he would later be depicted by Raphael himself in 1517 in another of his masterpieces: the Oath of Leo III in the Stanza dell'Incendio di Borgo in the Vatican.

And then later, in 1518, in the Portrait of Lorenzo de'Medici, Duke of Urbino.

Lorenzo, recalls Viggiani, was born in Florence in 1492, son of Alfonsina Orsini and Piero il Fatuo, eldest son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, from whom the newborn had taken his name.

after the

exile of his family and the subsequent restoration of the same in 1512, he had returned to Florence as the first of the city.

From that moment his interests had focused exclusively on politics and on the mission of consolidating the fortunes and power of his family.

Bravo and ambitious, the young Medici, to the point of forging a strong bond with Francis I, King of France.

And here the third protagonist of this story enters the scene, namely the French monarch.

Who, according to the scholar, would be the person the two young men in the painting are looking at, as well as probably the recipient of the painting.
