The gaze is fixed, the movements are choppy: Anyone who is on Instagram and TikTok these days cannot avoid the »Wednesday« dance.

Based on the school prom scene in the Netflix hit of the same name, thousands of people on social networks are currently imitating the movements of leading actress Jenna Ortega and underlaying their videos with »Bloody Marry« by pop star Lady Gaga (even if Wednesday was originally based on the song » Goo goo muck" from "The Cramps").

In "The Tonight Show" of the US broadcaster NBC, Ortega now spoke in detail to the host Jimmy Fallon about the history of the choreography.

The 20-year-old actress came up with the dance for her Wednesday Addams character within two days.

Various influences came together: In addition to the British rock band "Siouxsie and the Banshees", archive footage of dancing teenagers in the Gothic scene of the 1980s and US singer Lene Lovich, Ortega says he was inspired by the German mother of punk, Nina Hagen , to inspire.

More than a billion hours streamed

The streaming hit »Wednesday« was released on November 23 on Netflix.

The US mystery series produced by Tim Burton revolves around the eponymous daughter of the weird Addams family, who is investigating a series of murders at a boarding school for supernatural beings.

There have been comics, TV series and movies about the Addams Family before.

Ortega also appropriated some of the dance moves by the first Wednesday actress, Lisa Loring.

In mid-December, the streaming service announced that Netflix viewers worldwide have spent more than a billion hours watching the series.

So far, only two series have achieved such a strong response.

The Korean world hit »Squid Game« and the fourth season of the American youth horror series »Stranger Things«.
