The countries participating in the Cop 15 in Montreal have reached an 'historic' agreement for the protection of biodiversity "The package has been adopted", announced the president of the United Nations Summit, the Chinese Environment Minister Huang Runqiu at the end of a long night marathon in Montreal.
In particular, the UN countries have agreed to make 30% of the territory and seas protected areas by 2030, to allocate 30 billion dollars a year to help developing countries protect nature, to rehabilitate the 30% of ecosystems degraded and to halve the risk associated with pesticides.
Currently, 17% of land and 8% of seas are protected areas.
Cop15 was presided over by China (it was supposed to be held in Kunming, but was postponed due to Covid).
The final document passed despite stiff opposition from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
