Covid: Gimbe, -21% cases but deaths are rising, 103 a day

In one week the infections of Covid-19 in Italy drop (-21.1%) but deaths are on the rise (+4.8%): over one hundred a day. On the other hand, hospitalizations (+2.4%) are stable and there is a slight decrease in intensive care (-4.2%). (HANDLE)


(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 19 - In one week the number of Covid-19 infections in Italy is down (-21.1%) but deaths are on the rise (+4.8%): over one hundred a day.

On the other hand, hospitalizations (+2.4%) were stable and there was a slight drop in intensive care (-4.2%).

Finally, we are approaching the Christmas holidays with almost 72% of frail and over-60s discovered because they have not received the fourth dose of the anti-Covid vaccine.

This is highlighted by the independent monitoring of the Gimber Foundation relating to the week of 9-15 December 2022. Deaths are therefore increasing further: 719 in the last 7 days (of which 17 referring to previous periods), with an average of 103 per day compared to 98 in the previous week.


   Gimbe notes in the week 9-15 December, compared to the previous one, a decrease in new cases (174,630 vs 221,324) and an increase in deaths (719 vs 686).

Currently positive cases are decreasing (485,654 vs 523,075) and people in home isolation (475,894 vs 513,525).

Hospitalizations with symptoms were substantially stable (9,439 vs 9,215), and intensive care was slightly down (321 vs 335).

All Regions with the exception of Sardinia (+14.1%) recorded a drop in new cases (from -3.2% in Calabria to -32.7% in the Autonomous Province of Trento).

In 13 Provinces there was an increase in new cases (from +0.3% in Southern Sardinia to +49.4% in Oristano), in 94 a decrease (from -3.6% in Salerno to -36.9% in Prato ).


   The incidence exceeds 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 7 provinces: Rovigo (593), Fermo (559), Massa Carrara (535), Chieti (525), Vicenza (520), Ascoli Piceno (515), Padua (513).


    The number of total swabs carried out then drops (-13%): from 1,256,722 in the week of December 2-8 to 1,093,207 in the week of December 9-15.

In particular, rapid swabs decreased by 14.3% (-151,015), while molecular ones by 6.2% (-12,500).


   As for vaccines, as of December 16, 5,436,818 fourth doses had been administered, with an average of 20,836 administrations per day, an increase compared to 19,890 last week.
