New York City police say they arrested a woman who broke into actor Robert De Niro's Manhattan home, apparently targeting his Christmas gifts.
Police officers observed the 30-year-old climb into the basement of the building early in the morning, a spokesman for the New York Police Department said.
There was also talk of signs of forced entry.
The woman wanted to steal items in the apartment, but the officers caught her, it said.
The woman is known to police for a number of previous burglaries.
ABC News reported that the burglar was in the process of bagging the presents under the Christmas tree and that De Niro, 79, was home at the time and was later coming down the stairs when the woman was arrested.
The broadcaster also reported that the woman had already been arrested 26 times, including 16 for burglary and petty theft.
A spokesman for De Niro declined to comment on the case.
All he said was that the burglary happened in a temporarily rented apartment owned by the Oscar winner (“Raging Bull” and “The Godfather”).
