There are

still too many deaths at work, and every death at work is a defeat for the whole of society

.

The Pope meets CGIL executives and delegates and underlines that 'there is no union without workers and there are no free workers without a union'.

"There are still too many dead, maimed and injured in the workplace! Every death at work is a defeat for the whole of society. More than counting them at the end of each year, we should remember their names, because they are people and not numbers" , says Francis, who urges us not to allow "profit and the person to be placed on the same level!

The idolatry of money tends to trample on everything and everyone and does not preserve differences

. It is a question of forming oneself to have the life of the employees and to educate themselves to take safety regulations seriously: only a wise alliance can prevent 'accidents', tragedies for families and communities".

"

The throwaway culture has crept into the folds of economic relations

and has also invaded the world of work. It can be found, for example, where human dignity is trampled on by gender discrimination - why should a woman earn less than a man? -; can we see it in youth precariousness - why must life choices be delayed due to chronic precariousness? -; or again in the culture of redundancy; and why are the most strenuous jobs still so poorly protected? Too many people suffer for lack of work or for undignified work: their faces deserve to be listened to and the trade union commitment".

"There is no union without workers and there are no free workers without a union", Pope Francis said during the audience in the Paul VI Hall to the executives and delegates of the CGIL, led by the secretary general Maurizio Landini (

"good boy!" , Bergoglio defined it after the greeting address of the secretary

).

"Work builds society - underlined the Pontiff -. It is a primary experience of citizenship, in which a community of destiny takes shape, the fruit of everyone's commitment and talents".

One concern of the Pope is "the exploitation of people, as if they were performance machines. There are violent forms, such as illegal hiring and the slavery of laborers in agriculture or on construction sites and in other places of work, the constraint to exhausting shifts, the underhand game in contracts, contempt for motherhood, the conflict between work and family. How many contradictions and how many wars between the poor are waged around work! In recent years, the so-called 'poor workers' have increased: people who, despite having a work, are unable to support their families and give hope for the future".

"Work, understood as the fulfillment and dignity of the person, has been devalued by the current economic and social model to such an extent that one is poor even when working. There is still too much precarious work, illegal hiring, illegal work, exploitation and unemployment which is growing young people and women, particularly in the South".

Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini

, in his speech to the Pope, also underlining that "we continue to die at work. More than a thousand people died this year". Therefore, we must "put work back at the center to build a new social and economic model".
