A new tightening by the Taliban on the freedom of the Afghan woman: the authorities in power in Kabul today established a

ban on university education for women

"until further notice".

In a letter to all government and private universities, the Minister of Higher Education, Neda Mohammad Nadim peremptorily wrote: "You are all informed to implement the aforementioned order to suspend women's education."

Nadim, a former governor and military commander, as well as an exponent of the religious hard line, was appointed head of the University last October and immediately expressed his firm opposition to female education, defining it as un-Islamic and contrary to Afghan values.

Because of this,

Since their arrival in power, the Taliban, after effectively preventing women from working, had ordered the closure of girls' schools last March, pending new directives in accordance with Islamic law.

Directives never issued, not to mention the fact that without having attended high school it is in fact impossible to enter university.

On May 7, however, the decree of the supreme leader of the Taliban, Haibatullah Akhunzada, arrived, which imposed the full veil, which must leave only the eyes uncovered (when it is not a question of the burqa, which also covers those) when a woman is outside his home.

In this context, three months ago thousands of girls and women were able to sit university entrance exams across the country, albeit under radical restrictions on the choice of study courses, with veterinary science, engineering, economics and agriculture prohibited, and severely restricted journalism.

Not to mention the rules imposed on all universities, including separate classrooms and entrances for men and women.

In fact, however, just smoke and mirrors.
