(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 20 - Over 17 million Italians will be sending for the holidays at the end of 2022: 12 million will be sending for Christmas while around 5 million and 400 thousand will choose the New Year as the highlight of their holiday.
It emerges from a survey by Federalberghi.
The turnover will exceed 13 billion euros, bringing total expenditure back to 2019 levels. Once again, Italy will be the preferred destination: you will not go far away from your region of residence and many of those who will face more demanding journeys will to reach the families of origin.
"I see these results as a declaration of love by Italians for Italy," says Bernabò Bocca, president of Federalberghi.
"We have become less xenophilic it seems.
Over the past two years, many have spent the holidays on the doorstep due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
But now that we are more or less out of it, Italians are choosing to devote energy and money to a "made in Italy" holiday no longer as a stopgap, but as a choice" adds the president of hoteliers.
As for CHRISTMAS (there will be 12,21,000 Italians on the move) 98.9% of Italians will remain in Italy against 1.1% who will choose abroad.
Of those who will remain, 72.3% will not leave their region.
The ranking of favorite Italian destinations sees cities other than the one of residence in the lead (36.8%), followed by art locations (24.6%), mountains (24.5%) and seaside resorts (6.5 %).
For NEW YEAR (5 million 388 thousand Italians will leave) the majority (89.6%) will choose to stay in Italy, mainly choosing the mountains (30.4%), cities other than their residence (30.4%) or places of art(27.9%).
The remaining 10.4% will instead opt for abroad, preferring the big European capitals (78.6%) and the sea (10.7%).
