The couturier Azzedine Alaia and the photographer Arthur Elgort together shaped the fashion and costume of the eighties.
While the stylist was seeing his ideal woman, sinuous and sensual, finally embodied in the streets, given the ever-increasing number of clients, the American photographer opened the windows of his studio, transforming the city and its movement into the new frame of his services photography, especially for Vogue.
Both of these two artists have actively contributed to the renewal of the representation of a contemporary woman, increasingly strong-willed, determined and independent.
An exhibition at the headquarters of the Alaia Foundation in Paris, scheduled from 23 January to 20 August 2023, and a book published by Damiani, retrace this long collaboration between Alaia and Elgort.
The exhibition is curated and directed by Carla Sozzani and Olivier Saillard.
Timeless photographs that have also become essential for the couturier's fashion iconography, such as the most secret ones, form the core of the exhibition in Paris, which aims to be a dedication to photography and fashion, in a revival orchestrated by Alaia and Elgort .
The exhibition creates a dialogue between thirty photographs by Arthur Elgort and some original models created by Azzedine Alaia.
Arthur Elgort was born in 1940 in New York City.
After attending Stuyvesant High School, he went on to study painting at Hunter College.
But he soon decided to try his hand at photography, realizing that he was a talent.
In 1971 he made his debut in the prestigious British Vogue.
With just one shot he created not only a new sensation, but a permanent style in the world of fashion photography.
The photos of him, all instantaneous, relaxed and nonchalant, were a breath of fresh air in a world where the background always consisted of a fixed photographic studio, a rigid staging where shots were taken of immobile models, similar to mannequins.

less made up and were simply enhanced by the natural light he favored.
